Nomoi Design worked with SC3 Concepts and LaQuinta Hotels to produce a time-lapse video showcasing a lego type construction. This Stackable Construction is parallel to modular construction in that the components are built off-site; however, stackable veers away from the modular design in that it is part of a larger whole, requiring new concepts in engineering and green design.
Three major benefits that motivate SC3 to build stackable encompass costs, quality and maintenance. Controlling costs and sustaining the environment are clearly a selling point, as prices soar over commodities. Quality and consistency is the buzzword in hospitality and having a good review from guests is essential.
How does stackable construction allow better cost control? First, a major portion of the building, the room components themselves, is being created in a climate controlled environment. This reduces inclement weather days, controlling moisture in the components to 12%, and allows for better quality control as well as more efficient time management in the labor force. Second, the site/foundation work may be completed simultaneously with the room components, and any conventional build portions may be completed in tandem with erecting those components, and the entire package comes together in half the time of a conventional build structure. Finally, as the stackable components are being built off-site, the management of funds is better allocated per those components, and less change orders processed as a result of superior project management both in the off-site facility and the SC3 general construction office.
State-of-the-art methods and materials, proprietary products and considerable time in research and development bring each project closer to the ultimate low-cost, low-maintenance project every Owner dreams of. SC3 was aware that the modular industry answered for up to 50% of the entire product, so they dedicated themselves to their re-education. This R&D process allowed them to streamline the design and their construction techniques, and intersecting with the modular design, brought the 100% product to the table. SC3 is proud to bring at least 4 years of research and development, and 17 essential proprietary engineered procedures to their system. Currently, SC3 has two projects completed, three under construction and several in negotiation. By the end of 2013, SC3 will have 525 rooms completed.
